In connection with booming in Lincoln Naughty-Cal mentioned the industry that is in Lincoln. This brought to mind the metalworkers down near Stamp End Lock. They had a very large hydraulic hammer that made heck of a loud noise. Could this be the source of the booming sound.

That could very well be the answer - the distance, frequency and pitch would be about right.
Good idea.
That is the source of the noise. When I was once a little girl, I'd ask my mamma, (sorry, broke into a bit of Dorris there) "what is that noise?" Twas my father who let me into the secret as he himself used to work at what was then called Smith, Clayton Forge, which is a little further down stamp end.
